2011 Potential Free Agent Signees – Michael Huff, S

Yesterday, we highlighted Eric Weddle as a potential signee for the Jaguars once free agency opens up. Now, we’re going to take a look at FS, Michael Huff from Oakland. I pointed out that Eric Weddle was a very durable guy, but Huff actually wins the “durability battle.” Huff has played in every game since coming into the league in the 2006 season.

Position: FS

Height: 6’1″

Weight: 205 lbs.

Like Weddle, Huff does a little bit of everything. Last year he had 77 solo tackles, 4 sacks, 7 passes defensed, 3 interceptions, and 3 fumbles forced. If we were all about stats, we would call this guy the best available safety free agent. Now we aren’t all about the stats, so; let’s dive a little deeper.

Pros: Athleticism may be Huff’s biggest asset. He has good speed, and he also uses his instincts to play quick. He’s a player that can play in coverage, he can help with run support, and he can rush the passer.

Cons: He isn’t the biggest guy. He also can be the victim of gambling and missing from time to time. Huff plays using his instincts, but it allows to play fast, but when he misses, it can be a disaster.

The Verdict: Why wouldn’t a Jaguars fan want them to go after Huff. Eric Weddle and Michael Huff are on the same level, and getting either one of these guys would be great. My thoughts are this. If not Weddle, then Huff. If not Huff, then Weddle. I really hope Gene Smith is able to land one of these two guys, as the addition would be huge for the Jaguars; secondary.
